Hashish: Everything You Should Know

Hashish: Everything You Should Know

Hash, or hashish, is an essential part of the cannabis culture, with a long history to back it up. But a lot of cannabis enthusiasts have no idea how it's made or how to use it, so here's everything you should know about this cannabis product!

Understanding Hashish

Hashish, or hash, has been around for centuries and is found in several cultures across the world.  It's essentially a cannabis concentrate or extract, famous for its potency and easily recognisable, gourmet flavor.  The THC levels, consistency, texture, color, and flavor can all differ depending on the extraction method used to make it.

Hashish usually ranges from pale yellow to all shades of brown, while the texture is solid yet crumbly. Its physical appearance can resemble a block of brown sugar or caramel.

How is Hashish Made?

Hashish is made from the resin glands of the cannabis flower, more precisely by using a variety of mechanical extraction methods to separate trichomes from the rest of the cannabis.  Trichomes store high levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the primary psychoactive compound, and CBD (cannabidiol), as well as terpenes, natural aromatic compounds that are responsible for the flavor.

Hashish vs. Cannabis Concentrates

The main difference between hash and other cannabis concentrates like shatter, wax, budder, live resin, and others is the fact that hash is a centuries-old product made by using mechanical extraction, while those types of concentrates are made by using a solvent-based, chemical extraction (usually with butane or propane).

Types of Hashish

Several types of hash emerged over the years, most of them differ due to the extraction method, but there are other differences as well, such as THC-heavy hash made from cannabis and CBD-heavy hash made from hemp.

Types of hashish depending on the method of extraction:

  • Charas: Made by rubbing fresh cannabis between palms
  • Dry sift: Made by an ancient method of  mechanically separating trichomes from the rest of the plant material
  • Bubble hash: Made by using water to separate trichomes from the rest of the plant material
  • Ice water hash: Made by using ice to separate trichomes from the rest of the plant material
  • Rosin: Made by using pressure and heat to separate trichomes from the rest of the plant material

Hashish Lifespan

Compared to other cannabis products, hasish has a specific storage method to preserve its freshness, as well as its terpene and cannabinoid levels. Most types of hash can last a couple of months once opened, but it needs to be stored in an airtight container and left in a cool place, avoiding heat and direct sunlight. Some types of hash can also be left in the fridge or freezer to maximize the retention of terpenes and cannabinoids in the long run.

The most important thing to consider is keeping the hashish away from moisture, as excess moisture can easily cause mold. Heat and loosely sealed containers can cause the product to harden and change texture, and lose terpenes and potency over time.

While hash is considered a cannabis product for seasoned cannabis consumers due to its potency and specific handling, its long history shows just how beloved it is.
